At 0700 hours this morning BBC made following announcement. Quote “Brigadier A.E.W.S. Mallaby, Commander 49th Indian Brigade, of Surabaya has been murdered. The news came from Bataan two hours or so ago. General Christison, Allied Commander in NEI, has announced that Brigadier Mallaby was murdered in a cowardly manner whilst in conference with the Indonesian extremist leaders over the “cease fire” order. There are few details yet. Apparently the first news of the murder was brought in by two Allied Officers who were there at the time and managed to escape and reached their own lines. It is reported that General Christison has ordered Dr. Soekarno the Indonesian leader to appear at his. H.Q. this morning.
One reporter says when he was asked whether he would hold Soekarno responsible for Brigadier Mallaby’s death, General Christison replied “obviously” unquote.
